Frequently Asked Questions
What is Personal Development Advisory?
Personal Development Advisory is a confidential and independent advisory relationship focused on strengthening the human factors that shape how you think, decide, relate and participate in life.
The work may involve greater self-understanding, clearer judgement, stronger self-trust, improved emotional regulation, more intentional decision-making and a deeper understanding of the patterns influencing your circumstances.
The objective is not simply to produce a better outcome, but to strengthen the person responsible for creating it.
How is Personal Development Advisory different from coaching, counselling or therapy?
Personal Development Advisory is not coaching, counselling or therapy.
It does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, and it is not built around performance targets, motivational techniques or a fixed programme.
Instead, it provides a confidential and independent space to examine your circumstances, recognise important patterns, clarify what most deserves attention and determine what kind of reflection, decision or action may be appropriate.
Where clinical, psychological, medical or other specialist support is required, Personal Development Advisory is not a substitute for that care.
Who is Personal Development Advisory for?
It is for people seeking greater self-understanding, clearer judgement and meaningful personal development.
It may be appropriate when you are:
navigating an important decision;
experiencing significant personal or professional change;
carrying increased responsibility;
repeating patterns you do not fully understand;
feeling stuck, uncertain or disconnected from purpose;
seeking an honest and independent perspective.
Every engagement begins by understanding the individual and their circumstances before deciding what kind of advisory support may be useful.
What happens during the Initial Advisory Conversation?
The Initial Advisory Conversation is a confidential 90 minute discussion focused on understanding your current circumstances and what may be sitting beneath the concern that brought you there.
Together, we examine the patterns, behaviours, responsibilities and human factors influencing how you think, decide, relate and participate in life.
The conversation is structured around five stages:
Understand. Identify. Clarify. Recommend. Integrate.
You leave with an independent perspective, practical recommendations and a concise written summary outlining the principal observations, developmental priorities and recommended next steps.
You will receive a concise written summary covering:
key observations;
principal strengths and constraints;
priority development areas;
practical recommendations;
recommended next steps.
The summary is designed to help you reflect on the conversation and carry the most important insights forward independently.
What will I receive after the Initial Advisory Conversation?
Is the conversation confidential?
Yes.
Personal Development Advisory is conducted privately and confidentially. Information shared during an engagement is treated with discretion and is not disclosed to others unless required by law or where there is a serious and immediate risk of harm.
Do I need to have a clearly defined problem?
No.
Some people arrive with a specific decision, relationship, transition or recurring pattern they want to examine. Others know that something feels unclear, constrained or misaligned but cannot yet articulate the central issue.
Part of the advisory process is identifying what most deserves attention rather than assuming the first stated concern is necessarily the central one.
Will you tell me what to do?
My role is not to take control of your decisions or tell you how to live.
I may challenge assumptions, offer direct observations, identify patterns, present alternative perspectives and recommend practical next steps. The responsibility for what you decide and how you act remains with you.
The purpose is to strengthen your capacity to exercise judgement rather than create dependence on the advisor.
What is Ongoing Advisory?
Ongoing Advisory is a private monthly advisory relationship for people committed to continued personal development and independent perspective.
It may include regular one-to-one conversations, support with important decisions, examination of recurring patterns, practical guidance through changing circumstances and continued attention to the areas most influencing your development.
The work is not a fixed programme. It develops according to your circumstances, responsibilities and what genuinely deserves attention.
Can I begin with Ongoing Advisory immediately?
Every ongoing advisory relationship begins with an Initial Advisory Conversation.
This allows us to understand your circumstances, establish what kind of support may be useful and determine whether an ongoing advisory relationship is appropriate for both of us.
Is Personal Development Advisory suitable for a mental health crisis?
No.
Personal Development Advisory is not an emergency, crisis or clinical mental health service.
Anyone experiencing an immediate mental health crisis, risk of harm or need for diagnosis or treatment should contact an appropriate health professional or emergency service.
How do I begin?
Begin by booking an Initial Advisory Conversation.
The conversation provides an opportunity to understand your circumstances, identify what most deserves attention and determine whether further advisory support would be useful.
